Kathryn Marklein, 17.09.2013, E-Post: First, it is a the corpus sterni, so you are correct. The hole, albeit an unusual variant in populations (~5% have this anomaly), is not pathological. Sometimes the bones of the sternum leave a hole during fusion (see X-ray below). However, if we find more individuals with "holy" sterni, we may have evidence of relatedness; this congenital condition has been argued to have a genetic component.
